Conversational storytelling in serious illness
Stories connect us, especially amid the lonely, uncertain and often terrifying experiences of serious illness. Storytelling is a means for people who are suffering with serious illness to explore, find and share meaning, identity and values with those caring for and about them. When met with engaged, present, and compassionate listening, the process of conversational storytelling can reduce suffering by creating space for the person to feel heard, understood, and less alone. The purpose of this study is to further develop SOCKS tools to help us better understand conversational storytelling and storylistening in serious illness.
